There are four main sources of revenue for nonprofits, fees for services provided to their constituents, charitable contributions and fundraising event revenue, corporate philanthropy, and government grants. Reporting revenue from these four funding sources falls under two different categories, without donor restrictions and with donor restrictions. If the revenue received has no restriction or designation or no strings attached, then it is classified as without donor restrictions and the nonprofit can use the funds wherever they need, within their organization. But if the donor has imposed specific designations for the use of their funds, they must be classified as with donor restrictions until the restrictions are met and the revenue can be matched against the appropriate expense. Even though an organization is a nonprofit, they still need sufficient revenue to fulfill their mission. But it is important that all revenue be recorded properly and the nonprofit provides proper stewardship of those funds and is transparent and compliant in the use of those funds.
