I'm also grateful for tips how to improve my clips. *** Background of the clip: When I first watched how King Aelle (Ivan Kaye) tried to bargain for his life when captured by Ragnar‘s sons (offering them gold and silver), I couldn‘t believe it. That was so heartbreakingly desperate and idiotic at the same time for several reasons: 1- If it was gold and silver what they wanted, who would have been able to prevent them from just taking it? 2- They had come for revenge and only for this purpose had mustered an extremely large army. King Aelle himself must have realized that it just wasn‘t likely they would spare his life. 3- It was not only futile, but also insulting to suggest they would value their beloved father‘s life less than riches. So, it could only enrage them even more. - Just begging for mercy would have been less stupid. --- Therefore, this made him look like a coward AND an idiot. Most people seem to have come to this conclusion. But in my opinion, this is not a fair appraisal of the character. King Aelle was not a coward (although certainly not the bravest man ever) and not an idiot (although he had his foolish moments). That's why I disliked this bit - albeit it perfectly matched the downfall-and-death-of-villain pattern. - So, I was annoyed a little and looked into this whole issue a bit deeper. I found that, despite all the above, it wasn‘t so much out of character and – at least from King Aelle‘s point of view – not that idiotic to give it a try. It just shows how he never was able to really understand the Vikings and how he never learnt to NOT judge a situation solely by his prior experience. This is part of his personal tragedy - on which I'm going to give you another clip soon. *** BTW: Sorry for the German subtitle at the beginning. I put in the English ones in the last scene, but it's a bit tricky and the first one is not important, so it just wasn't worth the effort. *** Disclaimer: This is a fan clip.
