Creeping Bentgrass is a popular grass commonly used as golf course turf, but like other plants, it can spread outside of its intended range to establish itself as a weed on other properties.
Creeping bentgrass is a cool-season grass that grows up to 3 feet tall. When turf composed of this grass grows more than 1 inch, it tends to take on a messy appearance with the blades pointed in all directions. This grass primarily spreads via above-ground roots called stolons or runners.
The leaf blades are narrow and sharp-pointed. They are flat, with the upper surfaces being rigid.
When this plant matures, it produces yellow to purple flowers in a panicle formation.
Creeping Bentgrass is a cool-season perennial that will actively grow when outdoor temperatures are around 55 degrees Fahrenheit, usually in the spring and fall.
Look around your property for areas where this grass does not belong. When inspecting turf, check for patches of discoloration to find different grasses.
Creeping Bentgrass grows best in cool and wet conditions in well-drained loamy soil. It prefers full sunlight and will not grow well in shade. Common sites include, but are not limited to, lawns, golf courses, and other areas exposed to sunlight.
Creeping Bentgrass is a perennial that will continue to grow year after year, so to get rid of it, we recommend you check out Tenacity Herbicide. Tenacity is made with mesotrione. This herbicide is systemic and will control only labeled weeds it makes contact with.
For spot treatments with Tenacity, mix 1 teaspoon of the product and 3 teaspoons of a non-ionic surfactant into 2 gallons of water. Output 1 gallon of this solution for every 1,000 square feet of treatment area. We recommend you mix and apply your solution in a handheld pump sprayer or a backpack sprayer.
Spot-treat any weed you’ve found during your inspection. Use a fan or cone spray pattern to ensure the leaves are fully coated, and spray the weed to the point of wet but not runoff. Be sure to spray on calm days when temperatures are not too hot and when wind speeds are low to minimize drift.
When applied properly, affected weeds will yellow and begin to die. Conduct follow-up applications as necessary. With Tenacity, a repeat application may be made after 2 to 3 weeks.
Keep in mind that poa annua, kikuyugrass, zoysiagrass, seashore paspalum, and bermudagrass are sensitive to Tenacity. Avoid spraying in these turf types unless injury can be tolerated.
