They believe that bathing in the river results in one becoming free of sins and attain moksha or freedom from the cycle of life. She is believed to be the benefactor of all living beings and a great provider for everyone around her. But bringing her from heavens to the Earth was no easy task. It took the Vamana avtar of Lord Vishnu, anger of Durvasa maharshi, untimely death of 60,000 princes, several generations of Ikshvaku rulers, several years of one dimensional efforts from king Bhagiratha, Lord Brahma and finally Lord Shiva to bring the most pious but arrogant and mischievous river.
