Between 2006 and 2011, while the growth rate of other states (in terms of GSDP) was stagnating, Bihar’s GSDP was growing at double the rate it grew in the last 5 years. But one problem stuck with the state even after this immense growth: be it in the manufacturing sector, or the service sector, Bihar was unable to establish industries. CM Nitish Kumar and other leaders from the state have asserted that Bihar lacks industry because it has no port. But Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, are also landlocked, and still have industries 2 or 3 times more than Bihar. So is it Bihar’s image causing it to lose out on industries? Well partly, but there are other contemporary reasons which are pulling the state down.
