| Video Discription | Maralinga story to be told through eyes of traditional owners affected by Britain's atomic bomb testing Maralinga is typically synonymous with mushroom clouds and British troops in the Australian outback. But for the land's traditional owners, the Maralinga Tjarutja, its name summons decades of pain. In 1955, the British government secured more than 3,000 square kilometres of far west South Australia from the Australian government for an atomic testing site. Then in 1963, after seven nuclear bombs were exploded and hundreds of other tests conducted, the site was packed up, and the troops and scientists left. Aboriginal people who were not adequately warned about the test's dangers were blinded, affected by radiation poisoning and left with an ongoing legacy of radiation-related health problems. Official remediation of the site was completed in 2000, after the Australian government spent $108 million rehabilitating the area. The final section of Maralinga was returned to traditional owners in 2009. Reclaiming their land and history More than 60 years after testing started, a new generation of traditional owners is starting to venture into the former atomic testing range and reclaim the land. Jeremy Lebois from Oak Valley, a community established for the traditional owners after the atomic tests, said, until recently, the area had a sinister reputation associated with the tests. "It's because of the atomic tests that went on and the dust cloud. "People thought it was a wanampi, the serpent snake coming out and getting angry, but it was actually a mushroom cloud." Mr Lebois said traditional owners like himself were beginning to reclaim what was theirs, and feelings towards the test site were changing. "It'll change but it won't be forgotten," he said. Tours from a Maralinga Tjarutja perspective Tourists from across Australia travel to Maralinga for the atomic test site tours, which are operated by traditional owners but guided by Robyn Matthews, a former caretaker who has lived at Maralinga for more than 40 years. Since the tours began in 2016, the focus has been on the tests themselves. This is something the Maralinga Tjarutja would like to see change. "We've got to try and move on, but don't forget about what did really happen here as well," Mr Lebois said. "Let the rest of the world understand what the Brits and Australian government did here. Mr Matthews agrees he would like to see the narrative refocused. "I'd love somebody from the community to actually come out here and start learning about doing the tours," he said. "A lot of tourists say it's British history, but it's not, it's only part of it." Mr Matthews said Maralinga Tjarutja people, on a recent trip to the atomic bomb test sites, were becoming more comfortable with the area. "You could see that they weren't frightened of the area," he said. "It's a bit stepping stone, for sure."
