| Video Discription | (15 Apr 1999) English/Nat British forces began preparing troops and military hardware on Thursday to bolster forces already in place in the Balkans. The force will join other British troops already stationed in Macedonia, where they have played a pivotal role in coping with the influx of refugees to the country. The Ministry of Defence said that the force would take on peacekeeping and humanitarian duties once in position. The British army was loading its tanks on Friday at the York Barracks in the German city of Munster. Twelve Challenger tanks are due to leave from the base on Friday morning for the north German port of Emden. They will be taken from there by boat to Thessaloniki in Greece. The Ministry of Defence in London stressed that this movement was part of a plan of deployment that had been underway for some time. One of the commanding officers outlined the role of his men and machines. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I am loading my squadron of tanks, 12 Challenger main battle tanks, onto a train which will go up to Emden. My mission as stated at the moment is to move my squadron complete into Macedonia in support of the K-FOR mission whenever it comes". SUPER CAPTION: Major Nick Hunter, British Army The troops will go to Macedonia to bolster the existing contingent of British troops in the region who have been helping the Macedonian authorities cope with the influx of refugees from Kosovo. Some of the men are happy to be going into action but the families they will leave behind are never far from their thoughts. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Well I'm quite happy to be actually going there now after waiting so long about. Obviously leaving my wife behind and that, but we're going there to actually do a job and it should be quite enjoyable". SUPER CAPTION: Private Bensley, British Army The tanks will eventually be joined by around two thousand troops bringing the total number of soldiers in the area to over six thousand. NATO has so far not committed itself to the use of ground troops in the Balkans but these troops would be ideally placed if alliance leaders changed their minds.
