| Video Discription | Efforts to improve food security often focus on energy and calories but nutritional needs are important to avoid micronutrient deficiencies such as zinc, iron, iodine and selenium - common within regions of Africa and South Asia. Martin Broadley explains how genetics, agronomy and social science can influence the availability of nutrition in global crops. GeoNutrition aims to contribute to the challenge of reducing micronutrient deficiencies (MNDs), especially in Africa and South Asia. GeoNutrition takes a geographical approach to nutrition. Scientists can study soil, agricultural and landscape datasets, to understand and map how spatial factors affect nutrient supplies into crops and food systems. Social scientists can explore how urbanisation, demographic change, market access, and policy decisions influence nutritional pathways leading to health and economic outcomes. By layering and mapping data, from public and private sources, GeoNutrition approaches can provide new and valuable insights into agricultural, nutritional and health baselines. His research seeks to increase our understanding of mineral nutrients in agriculture and wider food systems. A particular focus is on understanding the movement of nutrients to humans and livestock diets and on improving the nutritional quality of crops using agronomic and genetic approaches. This work involves collaborations with soil and crop scientists, nutritionists, and social scientists and government institutes in Africa. In a policy environment, Martin has recently contributed to multi-sectoral work in Pakistan on Communicating Nutrient Stewardship for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
