| Video Discription | Long before satellite communication, cables ran between Europe and America to convey telephone and telegram communications. These atlantic cables were serviced by ships. This film shows a tour around the cable laying ship CS Recorder (3). The ship was of 3430(GT), 340ft in length and built in 1954. This film was shot while she was in the Thames Estuary some time in the 1950s. It gives a rare glimpse into life on the ship. The film is taken from a longer documentary entitled "Through the Seas We Speak" about Cable and Wireless Ltd and their work. I believe the film is lost (well I could not find it). It was produced and directed by Olive Negus, the story was written (I think) by Vincent Ball, and Cecil H. Williams is credited with narration. [yNtzzWYr740] |
