Most people use the term lectionary catechesis to refer to what you’re talking about (lessons that flow from the Sunday Scripture readings). In my experience, liturgical catechesis is any for that prepares one to celebrate the liturgy more fully. Something as simple as preparing a prayer table for Advent with a purple cloth and an Advent wreath and inviting children to sing the refrain of O Come, O Come Emmanuel is a form of liturgical catechesis. Or beginning class by asking the children to trace a cross over their forehead, lips, and heart as together you pray, “May the Word of God be in my mind, on my in and in my heart,” is a form of liturgical catechesis. In other words, any religious education program can incorporate liturgical catechesis into its existing format without changing the entire curriculum. It is simply a matter of integrating our liturgical life into our catechesis to prepare our young people to participate more fully in the Mass.
WHAT IS LITURGICAL CATECHESIS?
It is how the Church prepares you to celebrate liturgy and reflect on a liturgical celebration by understanding the sacraments…liturgical catechesis is sacramental.
Introduction:
From ancient times, liturgy has been the heartbeat of the Church. Through it, the Christian people gather for worship, their life in Christ is renewed, and they are sent out on a mission.
Again and again, at Sunday Eucharist, in the sacraments, and in the Liturgy of the Hours, the Church is called to share in the mystery of Christ and to go forth to be leaven in the world.
In the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, the liturgy is “the summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed; at the same time, it is the font from which all her power flows.”
What is Catechesis?
"Catechesis is nothing other than the process of transmitting the Gospel, as the Christian community has received it, understands it, celebrates it, lives it and communicates it in many ways."
Jesus empowered the Church to continue His mission when He said,
The absolute authority has been given to me both in heaven and on earth; go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations. Baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Teach them to carry out everything I have commanded you. And know that I am with you always, until the end of time. (Mt. 28:18-20)
Catechism is a related term of catechesis.
As nouns, the difference between catechesis and catechism is that catechesis is religious instruction given orally to catechumens. In contrast, the catechism is a book, in question-and-answer form, summarizing the basic principles of Christianity. Many people recall the term C.C.D. which stood for the "Confraternity of Christian Doctrine," which served parishes in their efforts to provide religious education to children who attended public schools. Today, we have retrieved the notion of catechesis to capture the broader mission of the Church to proclaim the Gospel to adults, youth, and children to "put people in communion with Jesus Christ."
