| Video Discription | Preserve your chainsaw carvings and other outdoor wooden art. Watch as we discuss tools, timing and see how to do it. I'll even show you how to fix your mistakes if you make a mess! For your sealing project you can use: *Krylon Matte Finish from a spray can *Minwax Polycrylic with a brush *My backup sealer in case I ran out was Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane Tools: -Stiff brush to remove dirt from carving -Chipping brush to dab up puddles of sealer -Small paint brush to apply Polycrylic -Paint can opener to open can and to use in one of the clean up methods -Thin cotton rags -Mask to filter out back spray from the Krylon spray can -Scaffolding to stand on it your carving is too high to reach like this one I recommend four coats. Most products that I use will dry quickly outdoors in the wind and sun. Using the slow gentle method I describe in this video, the beginning point is usually ready for the next coat by the time I get to all of the carving. Even if you use the "messy" method, by the time you dab up the puddles and brush out the bubbles, the carving may be dry enough to start the next coat. You may only see two passes in this video-one with the spray can and one with the paint brush-but I went back over the chainsaw carved face twice with each method. I recommend a full can of spray sealer each spring on each carving. This will help to preserve the color of the wood, any painted features, prevent mold and wood decay. There are some carvings that people like to let them age in the sun because they look more interesting as the sun and the wind age them. These don't need to be sealed, of course, but need to be set on a surface that drains well and doesn't stay moist. Other wise the base of the carving will soften and rot. The sealer foams really badly as the material is applied. Your first line of defense is to apply it gently. Your second line of defense against leaving ugly streaks and bubbles is to get plenty of sealer on the brush and let it come out more naturally rather than pushing hard or brushing more vigorously to empty the brush. I also show a "messy" vigorous method that creates foam to show how to clean up. It may feel like your getting done faster but with all the clean up you probably are not:) To remove the bubbles, streaks, puddles and too much white haze: 1. Gently brush away the bubbles 2. Continue brushing while it dries (spelled it wrong on the video...oops!) 3. "Dab" us the puddles of sealer 4.
