| Video Discription | (30 Sep 2020) LEAD IN: A 300 year old Chinese painting is going on display to the public in its entirety for the first time. The paining, made up of 12 scrolls measuring over 200 metres in total, had been separated and dispersed around the world, but has now been brought back together by a private collector. Sotheby's will present the masterpiece this weekend (3rd October 2020), before auctioning a collection of Chinese classical paintings on October 8. STORY-LINE: All 12 scrolls that make up "The Kangxi Emperor's Southern Inspection Tour, Scroll VI" reunited and on display for the first time at Sotheby's Hong Kong. The 300 year-old Chinese masterpiece was created by court painter Xu Yang. It measures more than 200 metres and took six years to complete. The scrolls were kept in the Imperial City for more than 200 years after Emperor Kangxi's death in 1722, but were dispersed abroad in 1901 as the Qing dynasty drew to a close. Although not for sale, this weekend for the first time ever, Sotheby's Asia will be presenting the painting as a whole to the public for the first time. "What is most exciting for us this time is to show for the first time in its entirety the masterpiece that is scroll six of the Kangxi Emperor's Southern Tour. It is a scroll that was mutilated in 1938, cut in four pieces, they were further cut, altogether in seven pieces and had been dispersed around the world since. And for the the first time thanks to the obsessive quest of a private collector we have them here for the whole world to see," says Nicholas Chow, Chairman of Sotheby's Asia. The scrolls depict a tour that the Kangxi Emperor took in 1689 across southern China to inspect flood controls on the Yellow River and the Grand Canal. He took a total of six Southern Tours, which are said to have contributed to political stability and economic development during the Qing Dynasty (1644 to 1911/12). The scrolls are individually owned and collectively are worth many millions of dollars. "In 2010 when the first piece, the first part of it was sold at auction it fetched about $4 million US, and the last piece when it came to the market in 2016 fetched about close to $10 million US. So the value is, it ranks among the most important and valuable Classical Chinese paintings ever to be shown to the public," says Chow. Being presented alongside "The Kangxi Emperor's Southern Inspection Tour, Scroll VI" is another precious scroll painting - "Five Drunken Princes Returning on Horseback" by Ren Renfa, a renowned Chinese artist. This one is for sale and is expected to fetch between $10,340,000 and $15,510,000 (US) when it goes to auction next week. In the painting, five drunken Tang dynasty princes can be seen taking a joyous horse ride with four attendants. One of the princes is Li Longji, who later become Emperor Xuanzong in the Tang Dynasty. "This painting depicts the story of the five drunken princes after they had a very happy time and then they got drunk and go back home. So among the five princes one of them is the future emperor. In this painting we can see that he was depicted as the one who can tolerate the drink, to go back home together with the other drunken princes," says Sally Fong, a specialist in classical Chinese paintings for Sotheby's. "Five Drunken Princes Returning on Horseback" was transported out of the Forbidden City by Pu Yi, the last Emperor of China, after the fall of the Qing dynasty and acquired by Chinese art dealer Walter Hochstadter in the United States.
