A fiduciary responsibility or duty is the highest duty the law can impose upon an individual. It's such an important duty in the law that it is the same duty a parent owes to their child. The fiduciary duties a director owes the church they serve are the duties of care, loyalty, and obedience. The duty of care requires that a director be reasonably informed about the church's activities, attend directors meetings, and participate in decision making with the same care as an ordinary person in similar circumstances. The duty of loyalty requires that directors undertake their duties in the best interest of the organization and not in their own or someone else's interest, and that directors placed the interest of the church before their own personal or professional interests. The duty of obedience requires that directors abide by laws, local, state, and federal, and follow regulatory requirements.
