| Video Discription | NO THANK YOU I’ve spoken many times before about actors receiving “NOs” in the film and theatre industries. #OwnTheNo Lately, I’ve been thinking about the times when actors are the ones who have had to give a “No” to a director, writer or casting director. I’ve said it before and it probably bears repeating, it is absolutely acceptable for an actor to say no to offers of work or auditions. In fact that sentiment is a key element of #OwningTheNo. Reasons to say no to direct offers or auditions. 1. Scheduling. Sometimes you just can’t make the timing work. You might be already working on something else for the proposed show/shoot dates. You might be away on holidays OR you just can’t afford to take any more time away from a day job. Depending on the scale of the project you could always ask them to let you know if the dates change. 2. Logistics and Money You may not be in the same region as the offer and there is no allowance for travel and accommodation. Perhaps you as the actor have to calculate the fee on offer versus the amount of money it will cost you to take time off your day job ( yep, many many actors have day jobs) pay up front for travel, accommodation, childcare costs , etc. Basically the offer isn’t paying you enough. Some actors will weigh up the costs versus the experience and chose to do the gig. They might think that this opportunity is worth the financial investment on their part, maybe this is a character they have always wanted to play, maybe the director is someone they greatly admire etc etc . Others simply cannot afford to do the gig. I have definitely had to say no to things because I just couldn’t justify the expense. *** If you are a producer reading this and travel/accommodation can be covered in the budget, please do not assume that people have the money for those expenses upfront even if you intended on reimbursing them after the shoot/project. **** 3. No creative alignment Maybe you just don’t like the script or project and it isn’t for you. This is a creative decision not based on anything personal about the writer/director/producer. 4. Self Preservation. Perhaps you’ve played very dark intense roles in your last 4 projects and you really need break from that type of work BUT the next gig on offer is more of the same. Sometimes you just need to say no and find a fresh challenge. This has nothing to do with the thing on offer and everything to do with what you want to do next. This NO is probably the toughest to give as it requires us the actor to be clear about what we really want creatively. 5. Reputation This is a sticky one but sometimes we say no to work because of a person’s reputation. That might be their unprofessional behaviour, their untrustworthiness, bullying, not paying people etc etc , etc. This obviously isn’t an extensive list, so please share why you’ve had to say no to things in the past.
