Rolex watches are designed to last a lifetime and require very little as far as user upkeep. Addressing anything to do with the inside of your watch, especially its movement, will require specialized tools and the assistance of a professional watchmaker. Consequently, it is never something you should attempt to do yourself. However, from time to time - especially if you wear your Rolex on a daily basis, you may find it necessary to clean the outside of your watch.
You can always wipe down your Rolex with a cloth as a way to easily maintain its luster. However, should you choose to do this, it is important to only use the right type of cloth (such as a microfiber) that will not scratch your watch’s finish. For more thorough cleaning, you can also use soapy water and a soft brush to clean the case and bracelet of your watch.
Additionally, any time you wear your watch in the ocean, it is important to rinse it off with fresh water afterwards to remove any leftover salt, sand, and debris that may still be stuck to it. Trapped salt and sand particles can act as an abrasive, so it is important to rinse them off your watch as soon as you are done using it at the beach or in the ocean.
With that in mind, this should only be done with Rolex watches that feature the brand’s waterproof Oyster Cases, and even then, it is important to make sure that the winding crown is fully screwed down against the case so that moisture does not enter the watch. Rolex watches are incredibly water-resistant, but their ability to keep out water is dependent on their crowns and case-backs being fully screwed down. Although simple and obvious, checking the winding crown before cleaning your Rolex is an important step of the process that should not be overlooked.
You can also take the bracelet off your Rolex to make it easier to clean. We have a whole separate tutorial video for how to do this, so be sure to check that out if you are unsure of how to remove your Rolex bracelet. With your bracelet removed, you will have easier access to the areas between the lugs, and you can even place your entire bracelet (but not the watch) in an ultrasonic for more thorough cleaning.
How to Clean a Rolex Watch:
Step 1: Make sure your winding crown is fully screwed down to the side of the case.
Step 2: Fill a bowl with warm water and a little bit of soap. A mild soap is recommended so that you don’t inadvertently damage your watch by using harsh chemicals or soaps with abrasives.
Step 3: Scrub your watch with a soft-bristled brush. If you do not have a specialized brush on hand, you can use an extra soft toothbrush to clean the areas between the various components of your watch and bracelet.
Step 4: Rinse your watch off with fresh water to remove any leftover debris and soap residue. If you have a dive watch or GMT with a rotating bezel, it is recommended to rotate the bezel during the rinsing process to help make sure that all residual soap has been washed away from under the bezel assembly.
Step 5: Once you have fully rinsed off your Rolex, dry your watch using a clean microfiber cloth. It is important to use a clean cloth that is free from any polishing compounds or cleaning solutions, as these can often disrupt the surface finish of your watch’s components.
It is not recommended to try to remove scratches from your Rolex at home, as the polishing and refinishing process for a Rolex watch should only ever be carried out by a trained professional with proper polishing equipment. This is typically done during service (recommended about every 5 to 10 years) and generally speaking, you should just leave any scratches or scuffs that your watch might receive until the next time you are having it serviced.
However, for older vintage Rolex watches with acrylic crystals, you can easily remove light scratches and scuffs from the crystal service with nothing more than a microfiber cloth and a dab of polishing compound.
To remove scratches from an acrylic crystal, place a small dot of crystal polish on the crystal surface. Apply pressure and rub with a clean microfiber cloth for 2 to 3 minutes. You can repeat this process as necessary to remove deeper marks, although the complete removal of severe scratches will typically require the crystal to be replaced. Even still, polishing your acrylic crystal is an easy way to maintain your Rolex’s appearance and significantly improve the appearance of any unsightly scratches and scrapes should they occur.
