Semin, South Korea's first death from the coronavirus was a 63-year-old man who had been hospitalized in Cheongdo Daenam Hospital for more than 20 years. He died after showing symptoms of pneumonia early Wednesday morning, but upon conducting an autopsy, health authorities discovered he had COVID-19. Experts say the mortality rate of the virus outside Wuhan, the Chinese city at the epicenter of the virus, is estimated to be around point-2 to point-4 percent. That's lower than MERS but higher than influenza. This means further deaths from COVID-19 are likely to occur over time in South Korea, especially if new cases continue to mount. Fifty-six new cases were confirmed on Thursday, bringing the total number of cases to 107. Out of the new cases, 51 were in Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do province, out of which 28 were related to the Shincheonji Church of Jesus - which was visited by the country's 31st confirmed patient. Two new cases were also confirmed in Seoul, and one each in Jeollabuk-do province, Gwangju, and Jeju. This single case in Jeju, government officials say he's a member of the South Korean Navy and this has the country's armed forces on alert. Yes, that's right Semin. The patient is a South Korean Navy sailor in his 20s. He recently visited his hometown Daegu, where community-based transmission is happening. He was immediately quarantined at his base after he showed symptoms of COVID-19. To prevent further spread of the virus within the armed forces, South Korea's defense ministry is scrapping outdoor drills, and limiting their off-installation travel and visits from Saturday. U.S. Forces Korea has also banned its personnel from traveling to Daegu. USFK Commander General Robert Abrams elevated the risk for the USFK to 'moderate' until the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention completes its contact trace procedures.
