| Video Discription | Oxidation of Bromine to Bromate is a redox as well as disproportionation reaction. Let us discuss balancing this reaction by half reaction method.To balance redox reaction, we need to follow certain steps. Step 1 Assign Oxidation number Assign oxidation number for Br. Since this reaction is disproportionation reaction , we can observe that Bromine is in 3 different oxidation state. This helps to split the equation into oxidation half reaction & Reduction half reaction. Step 2 Oxidation Half reaction split the equation into OH and RH , then write unbalanced equation in Oxidation Half reaction Step 3 Reduction Half reaction write unbalanced equation in Reduction Half reaction Step 4 Balance the atoms other than H & O in each half reaction individually. Here ,Both Oxidation & reduction half reaction Bromine atom need to be balanced. While balancing atoms, Take care of electrons too. Step 5 Balance electrons To make the number of electrons equal on both half reaction, Multiply one or both reactions by appropriate number. Now rewrite the reaction by adding two reactions into single after cancelling out equal electrons. Step 6 Balance oxygen atoms Add H2O to balance oxygen atoms Step 7 Balance H-atoms Since reaction is carried out in acidic medium, add H+ to balance hydrogen atoms. Step 8 Charge checking Finally check the charges on both sides.
