| Video Discription | My first test of my pottery kiln built in an old 55 gallon drum. This video was taken at around the 2 hour mark. I burned about 1 bushel tub of wood in about 3 hours. You can just see the outline of a pyrometric cone through the peep hole, which is a 04. By the end, the 04 cone was completely slumped, and the 2 cone was maybe slightly bent. Seems like it will work fine for earthenware, but higher firings might be a challenge. The kiln is sort of a cross-draft design, the firebox having a single channel into the back of the dome shaped chamber. The flames follow the curve of the dome, then exit out a chimney off to the left of the door. There is perlite inside the drum to insulate the dome, and the whole thing is wrapped in some much abused rockwool insulation. The kiln itself is made of a 2.5:1 mixture of sand and local red clay.
