| Video Discription | Sofia Karim is an architect, artist and activist based in London, shortlisted for the V&A's Jameel Prize: Poetry to Politics in 2021. In 2018 Karim began creating samosa packets as a form of resistance – a project sparked by the wrongful imprisonment of her uncle, the photographer Shahidul Alam, in Bangladesh. Sofia invites artists and thinkers from across the world to design samosa packets that engage with local and international struggles in protest and solidarity. The packets shown in the Jameel Prize predominantly address protests that began in Shaheen Bagh, Delhi, against the Indian government's Citizenship Amendment Act in 2019. The act reflects growing Islamophobia in India, through both legislation and popular attitudes. As the protests in Shaheen Bagh have grown into an enormous movement, led by Muslim women, Sofia's samosa packets speak to and support their activism, as well as interconnected struggles from all over the world. Her work transforms a humble, ephemeral object into a vehicle for political voices.
