| Video Discription | BLACK FRIDAY Shoppers around the country are out in force for this year's Black Friday sales. The tradition started in the US and it's getting bigger here in Australia all the time. But it's also a bit controversial. Black Friday is another one of those things we've copied from the United States. And honestly, there seems to be debate about where it actually started and why. It's held every year on the Friday following Thanksgiving, it traditionally marks the start of the Christmas shopping season. Many stores promote their sales in the lead up offering big discounts and opening up early. And now it's caught on here, possibly more so this year because of COVID lockdowns and no overseas travel experts predict many of us have a bit of cash to spend. And while that's good for the economy, not everyone's happy. Some smaller shops say it actually disadvantages them because especially after last year they can't afford to offer the same discounts as their bigger competitors. Others are critical because they say people are drawn to the sales and may end up buying things they probably don't need. But it looks like there's not stopping these bargain hunters. TEST CAPTAIN Pat Cummins has been named as Australia's new men's Test captain. The fast bowler was tipped to get the job after Tim Paine resigned from the position last week. Cummins will be the 47th test match skipper, and the first quick to hold the top job in 65 years. EGYPTIAN PROMENADE We're heading to Egypt now, for the unveiling of an ancient walkway. Fireworks, a parade, Egyptian authorities pulled out all the stops to celebrate this renovated promenade in the city of Luxor. It dates back three thousand years, and is known as the avenue of the sphinxes. Way back when, this city was Egypt's capital. The ancient road stretches for several kays, and has been under excavation for more than fifty years. CORAL SPAWNING The Great Barrier Reef is exploding with colour at the moment! The corals are going through their annual spawning phase, which experts hope will help revitalise the reef, and it's a pretty incredible sight. In the waters just off the coast of Cairns in Queensland, a new generation of coral is being born. What you're seeing here is a coral mating event that happens once a year, and marine scientists say there's billions, maybe even trillions of these colourful spawns! It only happens for a few nights after a full moon in November, and the conditions have to be perfect, the oceans have to be calm, and water temperature has to be above 26 degrees for a full month. As you can see, the conditions have been just that! It's a welcome sight for experts, because over the past few years, the great barrier reef has been in a bit of trouble. In 2016, 2017, and 2020, the coral network suffered badly from bleaching, which happens when the water is unusually warm. Two-thirds of the reef was damaged and a lot of coral died. But seeing these new plooms of coral spawns is giving hope to experts. So, here's to the future of our beloved reef. THANKSGIVING PARADE A large scale turkey. Floating cartoon characters. And Santa Claus. It can only mean one thing. This is the iconic Thanksgiving Day parade in New York. Now, in its 95th year! Last year's parade was closed to the public. But this year's event was full steam ahead! GINGERBREAD COMPETITION Now, to Stockholm in Sweden. Where 130 gingerbread houses are vying for a chance at top spot. This year's theme: Together. Among the entries were gingerbread versions of the 90s sitcom "Friends", Noah's Ark, and even the fall of the Berlin Wall. PIE AWARDS And finally, to a competition I would absolutely love to be on the judging panel for.
