| Video Discription | The Big Picture is an American documentary television program which aired from 1951 to 1964. The series consisted of documentary films produced by the United States Army Signal Corps Army Pictorial Service. Albert Gannaway Jr and David Burkey, both involved in the television industry, conceived the idea for the series, aiming to utilize film footage from the Army Pictorial Service in a format suitable for commercial television. The initial series, comprising 13 episodes, focused on different aspects of the Korean War and was broadcast on CBS in late 1951. The response from audiences was positive, leading the Army to expand the series as a publicity tool. The Signal Corps filmed segments suggested by Army information units worldwide, covering a wide range of topics such as military history, weaponry, training exercises, cooperation with allied forces, and Army sporting activities. The half-hour weekly program, hosted by Army Master Sergeant Stuart Queen, was filmed at the Astoria stages (now Kaufman Astoria Studios) in New York City. Queen introduced and linked segments narrated by notable figures such as Audie Murphy, Lorne Greene, Robert Mitchum, Alexander Scourby, Walter Cronkite, Raymond Massey, and Ronald Reagan. Initially shot on 35mm black-and-white negative, the series transitioned to 16mm color negative in the 1960s. It aired on 366 television stations across CBS, ABC, and DuMont networks, running for an impressive 828 episodes.
