How often do you want how often do you wash your hair? Every day, every day. You wash your hair with soap everyday? Well with shampoo but yes, every day. Look at that head of hair, look at that. Come on!
I wash mine once a week. We're going to edit that out. We're going to edit that out.
My hair is better when it's a bit dirty. Aren't we all?
David Winning. You may not know him by his face because he is a director and producer, but you do absolutely know what he's directed. Let's name some of the stuff he's done. Neon Rider, Stargate Atlantis, Goosebumps, Breaker High, Andromeda, Lost Girl, Sweet Valley High, Van Helsing, Earth Final Conflict, Friday the 13th, Are You Afraid of the Dark. And a ton of Christmas movies for the Hallmark channel. There's one that just got released, A Time for Him to Come Home. Ladies and gentlemen we're so excited to talk to our guest today, David Winning. Yeah! Hey guys. Hello! Just quickly let me tell you guys the reason I heard about you is because my very good friend Eric Keenleyside and saw that very brilliant interview you did with him. I thought these guys are cool! I want to get on this show. You're very correct. We are cool. Obviously. You are cool.
What motivated you that got you into directing? What was your spark? I have a corny story of getting a Super 8 mm camera on my 10th birthday. I started to make these movies in the backyard. And I got so into it in my teen years I actually went to my dad one day saying why don't we just buy a bunch of filmstock and make our own movie?
I got a clip of Sequence.
They play a clip from Sequence.
That was 1980. Yeah. 7980. I was 19 and I was just sort of desperately trying to do anything and I got a Canada Council grant to make a 15 minute short film. And I look at it now and I just gotta laughed cuz it's so bleak. So your shot sequence the short and then you developed it into a full script which became Storm. Which we saw in the summer of '83. Took me all of my twenties to finish. They show a clip from Storm.
You guys do your research so well, you going to show me a clip I'm going to forget I directed it. Haha. That's a clip from Storm. That's my first feature. I made it with no distributor in place. The Canon group in the late 80s said yeah we'll buy that. And then they found out it was only 75 minutes, and I was incredibly naive and I said advance me some of that money and I'll shoot some more for the movie. We cracked this movie open we shot additional 20 minutes.
What was it like when someone did hire you as a director? It was a shock. I started directing a series called Friday the 13th. I was in the Director's Guild book. Someone had gotten sick or bumped on the show when they were flipping through the book and they said Winning! Sounds positive. Hire this kid. They flew me Toronto based on my name. And I got there and they were like how old are you? 35. I was 26. Suddenly I'm in charge of this crew of 130 people. Paramount TV series. And I was just terrified. When you're actually making movies for somebody else it all has to happen within 12 hours. It has to be good or they'll be another director tomorrow.
Val Helsing.
They show a clip from Val Helsing.
You looking at a kid in a candy store when I got to direct the series. Probably the most fun I've had in the last 10 years. Quite a gruesome show but tons of action. I was simultaneously directing Hallmark Channel Christmas movies. By day we're lighting Christmas movies. And by night we're slitting throats.
How did Hallmark happen?
The goal here is to make a really dramatic tear jerking beautiful family movie that outlives you. This year I did the 5th Blake Shelton series.
They play a clip from Time for Him to Come Home for Christmas.
I just finished my 25th movie with Hallmark channel. I'm proud of them. I'm really part of them. It's positive entertainment. In dark times that's what people need. That's what they gravitate to. People can follow you on your website, davidwinning.com. you're on Twitter Facebook instagram @DirectedbyDW. That was fun guys thank you, thank you for inviting me. Take care guys.
Oh what a lovely man. No wonder he makes great movies? Cheers ladies. That was a great interview. Like comment share subscribe. [xQjLppfIZL0] |
