Despite these extremes, Death Valley offers more beauty and variety than one may think possible. Today we visit three highly visited stops within the park, Badwater Basin, Natural Bridge Canyon, and the Devils Golf Course, to see what makes this place so special. Badwater Basin boasts itself as the lowest point in North America. It lies 282 feet below sea level. The name comes from the fact that the water here has a high concentration of salt. In fact, a crust of salt covers approximately 200 miles making for a fantastic landscape. You almost might think it is snow until you go in for a closer look! A boardwalk in the area makes for an easy trek to look around, however, one can walk out onto the flats and look up into the mountains to see a sign marking sea level. Natural Bridge Canyon is a 2-mile trail that leads through a canyon. There is some elevation gain hiking to the bridge but the trail itself is well maintained. After a short while, the canyon walls narrow and you can see the bridge in the distance. Only when you get closer do you realize how massive this bridge actually is. The trail continues, however, many stop here and make their way back down to the parking lot. With the proximity to Badwater, you can get a great view of the salt flats. Finally, we stopped at the Devils Golf Course. A playfully ominous name was said by NPS to be given as "only the devil could play golf" on the surface. The rough and craggy surface can make for a challenging walk so one should take care to tread carefully and wear appropriate footwear. Once out in the field, however, the views are spectacular. It is said that if you listen carefully you can even hear the salt crystals expanding under the sun!
