| Video Discription | ‘Yelimu’ the new single by composer-pianist Tanya Ekanayaka is out now: https://Naxos.lnk.to/YelimuEL Yelimu translates as ‘Friday’ and belongs to the Puluwat language, classified as a severely endangered language and mostly spoken in the Chuuk state of the Federated States of Micronesia. While a part of Yelimu was composed during the latter part of the second week of September 2021, it was completed on Friday 25th February 2022. As such, this sutra is about relaxation on a slow-paced Friday and about the kind of deeper calm which accompanies living in harmony with the natural world. I find the word ‘Yelimu’ onomatopoeic in projecting a sense of a calming Friday. A slow opening progression segues to a second mellow theme carried by the left hand. This second theme is inspired by just two chromatically aligned notes of a chant-like song of the Chuuk people, which blend with further motifs to form the section. The next faster section, of consecutive changing harmonies on C, draws on the oral recitative quality of traditional chants on a single tone. The opening section returns briefly at this point, paving the way to the final section of the work. With subtle references to the other sections, the final section of Yelimu is richer yet laced with pathos intended as a homage to the beauty of the Puluwat language within the reality of its severely endangered status. .
