| Video Discription | #toronto #canada #yongestreet #drive #travel Evolution of Yonge Street: In the early days of #Toronto, bears wandered #yongestreet .Lieutenant Fawcett, of the 100th Regiment, cut a bear's head open with his sword on Yonge Street in 1809.Yonge Street was extended to Kempenfelt Bay near Barrie in 1824.The north-western extension of Yonge Street in Holland Landing went through Bradford before turning north to Barrie.By 1827, the Penetanguishene Road was connected.In 1852, the military garrison in Penetanguishene was withdrawn.In 1854, the Northern Railway of Canada was built along this established route between Toronto and Kempenfelt Bay and extended to Collingwood.The settlement along Penetanguishene Road predates the road.Subsequent extensions of Yonge Street (though never named as such) that became Highway 11 (some with military strategy in mind) pushed settlement northeast along the shores of Lake Simcoe.Muskoka Road penetrated the Canadian Shield in 1860, advancing towards Lake Nipissing.A horse-drawn streetcar line was completed on Yonge Street in Toronto in September 1861, operated by the Toronto Street Railway. [14] It went from Scollard Street to King Street. [15] By 1892, Toronto would have electrified streetcars.Confederation and the Canadian Pacific Railway further diminished Yonge Street's importance, as the new Dominion of Canada opened up east-west trade routes across North America.Henry Scadding, author of Toronto of Old, wrote in the 1870s that Penetanguishene didn't have the importance to need an approach like the "extension of Yonge Street Road".The Toronto and York Radial Railway used Yonge Street right of way in the late 1800s, originally to North Toronto, but expanding over the years to Sutton on southern Lake Simcoe.[16] The Radial Railway ran along the eastern side of Yonge Street, allowing the prevailing westerly winds to blow snow off the rails.The arrival of the Canadian Northern Railway in 1906 reduced traffic on the Radial, but it wasn't until Yonge became a major route for cars that the Radial really fell into disuse.Later, the line was bought by the townships north of the city and re-incorporated as North Yonge Railways, which operated for another 18 years before service ended, along with a bunch of other Radial lines, in 1948.Its former space was used to expand the road between Aurora and Newmarket.
