| Video Discription | https://dtsc.ca.gov/ In the wake of last year’s devastating Thomas Fire in Southern California, the Department of Toxic Substances Control was called in to help with the massive clean-up efforts. The California Office of Emergency Services tasked DTSC with removing household hazardous waste left behind in rubble and debris, while also evaluating hundreds of parcels of land. It’s no small task. Workers move from site to site at a moment’s notice. First, they may be deployed to a series of hundreds of homes in a suburb only to be called to another burn site with far fewer properties but with acreages of open land. Changing circumstances and environments pose unique sets of challenges involving logistics, communication and data evaluation. During the Thomas Fire, however, DTSC launched a new technology that streamlines the data-gathering process. The mobile application, a geographical system app, or GIS, gives workers access to data and input forms that generate crucial information in real time. From knowing when a worker arrives on site, or locating types of harmful substances to checking staff levels and pinpointing exact parcel locations, the app provides powerful data points – all at the fingertips of workers and the public. The public-facing dashboard allows people to view vital information from impacted properties, including their cleanup status.
