Frozen Embryo Transfer has two parts to it, the first and foremost part is preparation of the endometrium with use of proper medication. The endometrium is monitored on ultrasound during the preparation and FET is planned as soon as the endometrium reaches the correct thickness. Usually the IVF Lab prepares for FET a day before the procedure by placing Culture media for equilibration. On the day of FET, Embryologist’s locate the correct Embryo Straw per patient by cross checking the patient ID. Embryos are then warmed / thawed using a special protocol and warming media. This entire process needs to be completed within the timeframe mentioned in the protocol. We use Kitazato Warming media, one of the best and most widely used media in the world. After warming the Embryo’s, they are cultured in Incubator for a few hours. Most Blastocysts (Embryos) regain their metabolic activities within 2 to 3 hours of warming. At this point patient is taken to the Embryo Transfer (ET) room and prepared for ET. Embryo Transfer is very similar to IUI procedure, where a metal speculum is used to visualize the cervix so that the soft silicon Embryo Transfer Catheter can pass through it to reach the uterus. The entire procedure is guided by ultrasonography machine for better visualization of the Embryo Transfer Catheter. The process usually takes less than a couple of minutes. Embryo Transfer needs to be done with a full bladder (for ultrasound) and because of the full bladder, the procedure is a bit uncomfortable but usually not very painful. Usually patients do not feel any pain during or after the Embryo Transfer, however some patients may feel discomfort during insertion of the speculum. Once the speculum is inserted, the embryo transfer catheter passes without any pain through the cervix. Once ET is complete, patients can get up and go back home.
