| Video Discription | Turaiyur Rajagopala Sarma was a very senior vocalist of the generation of greats such as Semmangudi, Madurai Mani & GNB. He was a multi-dimensional person with classical music as his bread & butter, worked as a tunesmith (isai-amaippalar) in films & also notated many Thyagaraja krtis in "Swadesa Mitran'. A friendly person, he and I were very close when I was first posted in (then) Madras in 1971. We would meet very often in Thyagaraja Sangeetha Vidwat Samajam & the age difference of 30 years between us did not matter. He told me a lot of Sampradaya of old and interesting anecdotes about musicians of his days including my guru Sri Pazhani. In the 40s, Katcheri 'sets' of 10 to 12 gramophone records were popular as other recording devices were non-existing or very rare as wire-recorders. I have heard one entire Kacheri set of his (from varnam to mangalam) but unfortunately the set was thrown away by my acquaintance before I could acquire them! A pity like how many palm leaf manuscripts were confined to fire till Thamizh thatha saved many of them. He was a regular performer over the radio & I have heard a number of radio concerts in my younger days. It is unfortunate that no concert recordings of his are available today; at least none is accessible to me! In this upload, a few radio recordings & gramophone records are posted.
