Ryan: Hey, everybody, Ryan here at etrailer.com. Today on our 2016 Ford Transit 350, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the etrailer.com Class III trailer hitch receiver. This hitch is going to function great for recreational purposes such as using it to carry bike racks, and it's also going to be a great choice for towing. A lot of these vans are also used to haul a lot of people, and when you have a lot of people in a van, you're going to have limited storage space. With this in place, you can now put a cargo carrier on the back and haul all your gear or equipment that way.If you're primarily going to be using this hitch for towing, something you might be interested in is some trailer wiring, that way your trailer has all the proper lighting functions. If your trailer happens to have electric brakes, something else that might interest you would be an ETBC7 and a brake controller.
If you're looking to use a hitch-mounted accessory like a bike rack or a cargo carrier, but you're still going to want to have easy access to open your back doors without having to take everything off, our expert recommends the Kuat pivoting swing arm hitch adapter. What that's going to allow you to do is use your accessory, and it's actually going to come out and swing away off to the side. That way you can still get into the back without having to take everything off.As far as the hitch's weight capacity goes, it's going to have a 900 pound maximum tongue weight rating. That's going to be the amount of weight pushing down on our hitch. As far as the maximum gross trailer weight rating, that's going to be 6,000 pounds.
That's the amount of weight pulling on our hitch, so what weight of your trailer plus anything you might have on it. This hitch can be used with a weight distribution system and the maximum tongue weight remains the same at 900 pounds, but the gross trailer weight rating does increase to 8,000 pounds. However, it's always a good idea to check with your owner's manual to see if your Transit can pull that much weight. Now I'm going to give you a couple of measurements. These are going to be useful when selecting which hitch-mounted accessories to use. From the ground to the top inside edge of the receiver tube opening is about 14 inches.
You're going to use that measurement to help you figure out if you need to get a ball mount with either a drop or a rise. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the furthest edge of our rear bumper, that's about 7-1/2 inches. You're going to use that measurement to figure out if any folding accessories you might have can be stored in the upright position without contacting the bumper. To begin our installation, I went ahead and removed our spare tire. You don't have to do this, but it does give us a little more room to work. I'd like to point out where our attachment points are going to be to hold our hitch into place.
On this frame rail, there's going to be two holes, here and here. That's going to be the exact same set-up on the other side, so keep in mind, anything we do to this side, we're going to do the exact same thing to the other side. What we're going to do is go ahead and use some penetrating oil and spray it in the holes, and then use a tube brush to clean everything out. Now, what we're going to do is take one of our self-tapping bolts, that's included with the hitch, and run it into each one of the holes so we can put threads in it. The trick with this is, you want to make sure to get it started as straight as you possibly can, and that'll make life a little bit easier when we go to put the hitch in. Just going to put it in and push upward.Once you have the bolt a little more than halfway up, you can go ahead and pull it out. I personally like to keep each bolt with the particular hole that I used to thread it. So for example, I'll keep this bolt with this hole, and so on. After you have all of your holes threaded, I just like to use a little lube and our tube brush again, just to clean those holes out, just in case there's any metal shavings left behind. Once you have that done, we can work on using a fish wire to put our bolt in this hole. To use a fish wire, what you're going to do is take the coiled end and run it through the hole towards the front, it'll come out of the frame rail right here. Now we're going to take one of our spacer blocks, put that over our wire first, and then our carriage bolt will actually thread in to the fish wire like this. Now we can feed that hardware into the frame and just drop it down like this. Now, with an extra set of hands, we can put our hitch into place [DxhRjohWWAE] |
