But before this, you should know about muscular tissues and their types - So let’s begin with the origin and structure of muscles - Muscle is a specialized tissue of mesodermal origin. And contribute about 40-50 percent of the bodyweight of an adult human. Each muscle is made of many long, cylindrical fibers arranged in parallel arrays. The fibers are composed of fine fibrils, called Myofibrils. Muscle fibers contract in response to stimulation, then relax and return to their uncontracted state in a coordinated fashion. hence are categorized into 3 classes. Based on their location in the body Muscles can be 1) Skeletal muscles 2) Cardiac muscles 3) Smooth muscles Skeletal muscles are long thin fibers, closely associated with the skeletal components of the body and perform the function of contraction. They have a striped appearance, therefore they are called Striated Muscles. They are Voluntary muscles, as their activities are under voluntary control, and are involved in locomotory actions and changes of body postures. Cardiac muscles are the muscles of the heart and are striated. They are involuntary in nature as the nervous system does not control their activities directly. They form a network of cells, having one centrally located nucleus attached by an intercalated disc. Due to such an arrangement, when one cell receives a signal to contract, its neighbors are also stimulated to contract. The smooth muscle fibers taper at both ends, which is fusiform and do not show striations and are bundled together in a connective tissue sheath. The smooth muscles are present in the walls of internal organs, such as Blood vessels, Stomach, and Intestine. They are Involuntary as their functioning cannot be directly controlled. They function to move substances such as food, urine, semen and also constrict blood vessels.
