Amongst the gizmos featured at the Future Technology Fair in the capital Tokyo is a touch-sensitive robotic seal. But the main attraction resembles something a lot more human - a humanoid robot. VOICE-OVER: 0003 Looking like something out of "Star Wars", the Honda P-3 displayed its startling human-like abilities to the Japanese public at the Future Technology Fair in Tokyo. 0013 The robot's eyes are in fact cameras which allow the P-3 to sense where it is and adjust its position to keep its balance. 0022 But there's still a long way to go before we're likely to see a robot capable of the same range of movement as humans. 0030 SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) SUPER CAPTION: Toru Takenaka, Chief Engineer, Honda Research and Development 0033 The chief engineer for the research and development arm of Honda, the maker of the P-3, says that day won't come for another ten years. 0042 Though its movements are still slow compared with humans, real people struggle to compete with the P-3's almost perfect sense of balance. 0051 One of the biggest achievements with the P-3 has been getting the robot to walk on angled surfaces, including stairs. 0058 Honda has been trying to make a two-legged robot since 1986, and it says the P-3 could one day carry out tasks in which there's a high level of risk involved. 0109 But humanoid robots aren't the only mechanical wonders the Japanese are excited about. 0114 This baby seal robot responds to touch. 0117 The computer inside the seal recognises light and sound, allowing it to react to its environment. 0123 Makers of this fluffy robot hope it can interact with people just like normal household pets.
