| Video Discription | (3 Jul 1999) Somali/Natsound Somali warlord Hussein Mohamed Aidid has suffered a set-back, with the capture by Ethiopian troops of towns in western Somalia, which were previously under Aidid's control. Ethiopia's recent gains are fueling rumours in Mogadishu that the Ethiopian soldiers might try and make a move towards the capital. Osman Attu who controls part of South Mogadishu and is a rival of Hussein Aidid, has warned the Ethiopians against such a move. He hopes that if Ethiopia does move further into Somalia, more Somalians will join ranks with his fighters. One of the towns the Ethiopians captured was Baydawa, which Aidid's fighters are now preparing to try to take back. Near the town of Lego, 40 kms from the Ethiopian border and 60 km from the town of Baydawa, Aidid's fighters are training for the next offensive. Somalia has had no central government since clan-based leaders ousted dictator Mohamed Siad Barre in January 19-91. In a typical African story, these clans then turned on each other. The Ethiopians want to rid the region of fighters from Al-Itihad Al-Islamia This is a Muslim fundamentalist group seeking to annex southeastern Ethiopia's Ogaden region, which is inhabited by ethnic Somalis. Most of the retreating militiamen and civilians are loyal to General Omar Hajji Massaleh, who is allied with south Mogadishu warlord Hussein Mohamed Aidid. Somalia and Eritrea have been fighting a border war for the last 13 months. They are backing rival warlords in Somalia in an attempt to undermine each other's influence in that country. Eritrea has sent arms to warlord Aidid, as well as Ethiopian Oromo Liberation Front rebels who are trying to enter southern Ethiopia from Somalia.
