Rocks are constantly changing, moving, and forming new rocks. The rock cycle is how these changes happen. The rock cycle starts with igneous rocks. Igneous rocks are formed when molten rock, called magma, cools and hardens. This magma can come from volcanoes, or it can be formed deep within the Earth's crust. As the magma cools, it forms crystals and becomes an igneous rock. The next step in the rock cycle is when the igneous rocks are weathered and eroded. Weathering is the process of breaking down rocks into smaller pieces. Erosion is the process of moving these smaller pieces away. This can happen through wind, water, or ice. The pieces of rock that have been weathered and eroded are then transported to a new location. This is called sedimentation. The pieces of rock can be transported by wind, water, or ice. Once the sediment has been transported to a new location, it can form sedimentary rocks. Sedimentary rocks are formed when the sediment is compacted and cemented together. This process is called lithification. The next step in the rock cycle is when the sedimentary rocks are heated and pressurized. This process is called metamorphism. This can happen when rocks are buried deep within the Earth's crust, or when two tectonic plates collide. This process changes the chemical composition of the rocks and forms metamorphic rocks. The last step in the rock cycle is when the metamorphic rocks are melted and become magma. This magma can then cool and harden to form new igneous rocks, and the cycle starts all over again.
