| Video Discription | Title: Transforming geoscience education with interactive models for exploring plate tectonics Abstract: For two years the GEODE (Geological Models for Exploration of Dynamic Earth) project is developing interactive computational models and inquiry-based curriculum for exploring plate tectonics concepts. This talk describes and demonstrates two models 1) Tectonic Explorer, a 3D interactive plate tectonic model and 2) Seismic Explorer a data-based model, as well as the associated curriculum. This talk will also introduce our research on uncertainty-infused scientific argumentation. Our aim is to support students’ consideration of certainty as they explore geology through computer models and real-world data. Speaker Bio: Amy Pallant is a Principal Investigator at the Concord Consortium, a non-profit organization whose vision is a digital future where teaching and learning incorporate the best features of technology to improve education. Amy currently directs several NSF-funded Earth and environmental science projects focused on Earth systems modeling and the development of uncertainty-infused argumentation.
