Germany is one of the main powers in the European Union, and in the world. You must be well aware that this country has a history of intertwined traditions, both with historical figures and culinary culture. But what do we really know about Germany, a country that has always had a close relationship with France?
Did you know? Germany is the most populous European country outside of Russia, with a population of 82 million. And this first fact actually combines two: although it isn’t the most populous European country, nor is Germany the country with the largest living area: no less than a third of the territory is covered with forests and has as much greenery as there was already in the 1500s. This does not prevent the country from being one of the most industrialized in Europe. This figure, which is already quite substantial, is even more impressive when we take into account such a large number of inhabitants! So it can be argued that the demography, that is to say the concentration of inhabitants in one place, is very dense in German cities, because it is necessary to compensate for the uninhabitable portion of the nation. Berlin alone has 3.6 million inhabitants, compared to 2.1 for Paris! Other large cities such as Munich and Hamburg have 1.4 and 1.8 million inhabitants respectively.
Have you ever wondered where the many inventions that have absolutely changed the daily lives of millions of people, such as bicycles, cars, light bulbs, motors, contact lenses, or even caravans, came from? quote only these few creations? Well, let us tell you one thing: we owe them all to the Germans! Still many other fields have been subject to revolutionary discoveries, such as those made in the medical field like aspirin, or insulin. In terms of technology, Germany is also behind the invention of the walkman, the ancestor of mp3s, the pocket watch, and the automatic calculator. As if that weren't enough, let's end this list with a few unexpected items: clarinets, magazines and jeans are also straight from Germany. If you didn’t know, the inventor of the famous jeans Levi Strauss was born in Bavaria! Although he emigrated to the United States at the age of 18 in order to establish his creation, but he was none the less German. In fact, a museum dedicated exclusively to his creations and his life has been built to pay tribute to him in his native village of Buttenheim, located between Munich and Frankfurt.
You heard that right. While France is known as the land of human rights, it bans something that Germany allows its detainees to do, and is therefore getting ahead of it. For good reason, escaping from prison is not illegal in the eyes of the German government! It is in fact believed that wishing to regain one's freedom is a basic human survival instinct.
Having said that, if you escape you will still be wanted, and the German authorities will prosecute you so that you finish serving your sentence, but your attempted escape will not be taken into account, unless, of course, you are committing crimes against the law while on the run.
The term "ecology" was coined by Haeckel, a German biologist in 1866, and it's not for nothing. The Germans were, among others, the pioneers of the ecological movement, and it was even they who founded the first political party in honor of respect for nature in 1980. The awareness of the ecological impact on the planet is evident in the behavior of most citizens, given that 48% of the country's total waste is recycled. Since records began, the German industry produces a huge part of the wind energy globally and invented the world’s first electric tramway, in 1887. Regarding animals, as well as the flora, the world's first nature reserve is once again in Germany, in the municipality of Drachenfels. Out of a total of almost 700 animal reserves and aquariums, the one that captures the most imaginations is the largest zoo in the world, located in Berlin, with a population of 14,000 animals. Suffice to say that the Germans are close to nature.
