| Video Discription | Tenia cruris infection, also known as jock itch, is a superficial fungal infection of the groin & adjacent skin, which causes intense pruritis at the affected site. Most common etiological agents for tenia cruris infection include Tricophyton rubrum; and Epidermophyton floccosum. The disease is transmitted through a variety of ways. Including sharing contaminated objects such as towels and bed linen. Using contaminated toilets. And through skin to skin contact. Risk factors for getting the infection include, wearing tight or wet underwear. Visiting to tropical climates. Poor personal hygiene. Sharing clothes. Diabetes. Obesity. And overcrowding, which is especially applicable to places like prisons, armed forces, and among athletes. Patients present with a characteristic rash in the groin area, as you can see in this picture. Individuals will have intense itching at the site. Often there is a history of similar episodes. During the acute infection, the rash is moist. With chronic infection, the rash becomes dry and scaly, and has well demarcated circular margins. Penis and the scrotum are typically spared. However, the infection can extend to the perineum and buttocks. Approximately 50% individuals with jock itch have co existing tenia pedis infection. Tenia cruris doesn’t cause serious complications. Some minor complications include the following. Secondary infection in the area with candida and bacterial organisms. Hyper pigmentation of the affected area with chronic infection. Mistreatment with topical steroids can cause exacerbation of the disease and further spread. Finally, inadequate treatment may result in recurrence and re infection. Tenia cruris infection can easily be treated by applying topical antifungal agents such as imidazoles and allylamine. Patients should be advised to clean the area with warm water without soap, before applying the cream. Since recurrence and re infection is common, prevention is extremely important.
