| Video Discription | Researchers teamed up with local conservationists, scientists, and fishers to catch and study 50 sharks and rays in the Bijagós archipelago of Guinea-Bissau in West Africa. Among the species the team caught were the critically endangered blackchin guitarfish (Glaucostegus cemiculus). They attached satellite transmitters to two of them before releasing them back into the water making this the first ever the species will be tracked with this technology. Data collected from these trackers will provide crucial information to inform conservation policy, says Guido Leurs, team leader from the University of Groningen, Netherlands. The archipelago is UNESCO Biosphere Reserve covering 88 islands across 12,950 square kilometers (5,000 square miles). Fisheries management in the region has been a problem for decades as small-scale, and illegal fishing continues to operate in marine protected areas.
