The Hammer Museum
The Hammer Museum is known as the hippest art museum in town. Founded by Industrialist Armand Hammer to house his personal art collection the Hammer Museum is an art museum and cultural center known for its progressive exhibitions and public programs.
It is an acknowledged epicenter of contemporary art and also has important collections of historical art. In 1994, the museum set up an agreement with the University of California to operate and manager the museum .
The museum was founded by Armand Hammer, the late CEO of Occidental Petroleum, who built his name sake museum in Westwood, near the UCLA campus. It opened on November 28th 1990, just two weeks before it’s founders death. The Museum is attached to Occidental’s corporate headquarters.
The Hammer Museum is an important and high-profile showcase that mounts about fifteen programs a year featuring international artists, with a focus on Los Angeles based artists with new and emerging works. The Hammer is known for its innovative exhibitions of rising contemporary artists and sponsors dozens of artists at the Hammer and in exhibitions across Los Angeles.
The Hammer has five different collections. The Hammer Contemporary Collection, The UCLA Grunwald Center of Graphic Arts, The Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden on the UCLA campus, The Armand Hammer Collection and the Armand Hammer Daumier and Contemporaries Collection.
The two- story black and white marble Museum building is based on a Renaissance palazzo with galleries centered around an interior courtyard. Entering the open air landscaped courtyard of the museum you’ll find Lulu Restaurant with outdoor seating and California cuisine. The courtyard is also used for outdoor performances.
The Hammer Museum also provides free weekly programs throughout the year, including lectures, readings, symposia, film screenings and music performance. The venue also houses the UCLA Film and Television Archive’s cinematheque in it’s Billy Wilder Theater, also in the courtyard area.
On the upper level above the courtyard are the museum's galleries. Different temporary exhibitions are mounted throughout the year in four large galleries. The Armand Hammer Collection is on going in a fifth gallery.
The Hammer Contemporary Collection features modern and contemporary art of drawings, photographs, paintings, sculpture and media arts, depending on the artists and current exhibition. With works from over 100 international artist from the post World War II period, including pieces from artist such as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning and Philip Guston.
The UCLA Grunwald Center of Graphic Arts, is one of the most important collections in the country. Housing over 40,000 prints, drawings, photographs and artist books. The collection includes works dating from the Renaissance, to today, from old masters prints and drawings, wood block prints and contemporary photographs. Exhibition highlights of this collection include works by Rembrandt, Cezanne, and Picasso. The Museum rotates exhibitions from these collections.
The Armand Hammer Collection is the namesake of Armand Hammer’s original personal collection. Assembled over decades and named after the museum’s founder the collections is made up of mostly 19th and early-20th century French impressionist and post impressionist paintings. Examples include works by Franciso Goya, John Singer Sargent, Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh.
The Armand Hammer Daumier and Contemporaries Collection contains important works by French artist Honore Daumier and is the largest outside of Paris. Daumier whose works spanned the 19th century offered comments on the hypocrisies of bourgeois life in Paris, France. Using multiple media such as paintings, drawings, lithographs and bronze busts, with Daumier providing his satirist attitude towards French politics.
The Museum also over sees the Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden at UCLA, dedicated to the former chancellor of the university. The garden is a five acre park like area that displays more than 70 works of modern and contemporary sculptures. The collection has works by Henri Matisse, Henry Moore, Auguste Rodin and David Smith.
The Museum, with large airy spaces and has a wonderful design. The galleries are well lit and perfect for viewing the museum’s collections. There are audio and video guides to the museum to help find specific pieces. The Hammer Museum is a beautiful place to visit for anyone interested in art.
