Transcript: The concern with testosterone replacement and red blood cells or some patients may have heard of the H&H, which is the hematocrit and hemoglobin. A lot of guys when you give testosterone to your body, your body can make more red blood cells. Red blood cells are the cells that carry oxygen in your blood. So, in general, that's not a bad thing. Many endurance athletes train at high altitudes for that same effect. They'll go to Denver and train so that their body senses lower oxygen levels and produces more red blood cells so that they have more aerobic capacity. Many endurance athletes are looking for that effect. The caveat to that is if there are too many red blood cells, which we do monitor that with each set of labs, we monitor that closely. If it gets to a certain point where there are too many red blood cells, we do have a little bit of concern. The reason we have some concern is, if you think about it, there are more cells in the blood, so the blood's a little bit more viscous, a little thicker. So several things we do to address that. Initially, preventatively, we always have every one of our patients, whether you're on testosterone or not, we have you do a fish oil supplement. There are many benefits to fish oil. One of them is it's a natural blood thinner; it helps to combat any thickening effect that might occur. On the back end, if we do discover that your levels are getting to a point where we start to get concerned, a very simple remedy to it is we recommend our patients’ blood if they're able to donate blood. That's a win-win situation. You get your counts down, and you do a good deed, you help someone else. If you're not able to donate blood for various reasons, you've had a recent tattoo or infectious disease or any of those reasons; we give you a prescription for what we call therapeutic phlebotomy.
