Shortly after the driver was pulled from his vehicle, the fire spread and flames erupted from the burning wreckage. According to a local news station, the rescuer was a New York State police officer, John Vescio, who was filling up his car when the crash occurred on Tuesday, 3 June. He quickly rushed away from the flames, assessed the situation and returned, dragging away the unresponsive man who was still inside his vehicle.
