The bridge is a chain of shoals between Mannar Island, Sri Lanka, and Rameswaram Island, India, and is believed to be a remnant of a former land connection between the two countries. ISRO's research has uncovered an asymmetry in the transverse slopes of the bridge, indicating a dominant flow of material energy from the Gulf of Mannar compared to the Palk Strait. The volume of the bridge is approximately 1 cubic kilometer, with only a tiny fraction emerging above water. Previous satellite observations had confirmed the presence of the submerged structure but were limited to elevated areas. The use of ICESat-2's green laser photons allowed for the detection of the seafloor up to 40 meters deep, enabling the generation of high-resolution bathymetric data. The scientists utilized visual interpretations from the bathymetric data, including 3D-derived parameters such as contours, slope, and volumetric analysis, to confirm the physical features of Adam's Bridge.
