This marks a significant milestone as the CR-V e:FCEV is the only fuel cell electric vehicle made in America and the first production hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle in the United States to combine an American-made fuel cell system with plug-in electric vehicle charging capability. This compact crossover utility vehicle (CUV) boasts a 270-mile EPA driving range and integrates a fuel cell system with plug-in charging, allowing up to 29 miles of electric vehicle driving in urban settings and quick hydrogen refueling for extended travel. Patrick McIntyre, the lead at PMC, highlighted the center’s transition from producing the Acura NSX to the Honda CR-V e:FCEV. This shift underscores Honda’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality through zero-emission vehicles. The fuel cell system, co-developed with General Motors (GM), is produced in Brownstown, Michigan, offering double the durability and reduced costs compared to the previous system used in the Honda Clarity Fuel Cell. The PMC implemented several innovations to facilitate the CR-V e:FCEV production. New processes include assembling hydrogen tanks, compressing hydrogen to 10,000 PSI, installing the fuel cell system, and integrating an under-floor battery. The welding department underwent a complete transformation, introducing a new multi-material unibody construction and advanced steel welding robots. Modifications were also made to the paint system, with specific changes to accommodate the larger and heavier all-steel body of the CR-V e:FCEV. The CR-V e:FCEV provides a dynamic driving experience with selectable drive modes, including efficient EV modes and a Sport mode for enhanced acceleration. Refueling with hydrogen is as quick as filling a gasoline tank, while recharging takes 1.8 hours with a level 2 charger, offering up to 29 miles of battery range. Honda’s broader hydrogen strategy includes commercial vehicles, stationary power stations, and construction machinery, with collaborations underway to expand these applications.
