Vedic texts lay great importance on conducting a ceremony before starting to live in a newly built house. After the house is complete, Muhurtam or an auspicious time is fixed to perform the ceremony and enter the new house. The doors are decorated with mango leaves and fresh flowers. Banana stems are also tied to the poles for ushering in prosperity. Rangolis of rice flour are drawn at the entrance and at the doorway for decorative purposes. Vaastu Pooja is performed by Vedic priests to please the Vaastu deities for removing any negative energy in the house. A coconut and ash gourd is broken at the main entrance of the house to negate any evil eye or Drishti. Then a Kalash Pooja is performed by filling a copper pot with water, Navadhanya (9 forms of grains), and a coin. Mango leaves are arranged at the mouth of the Kalash and a coconut is placed on top. After Pooja, the couple enters the new house carrying this pot inside. A cow and a calf are let in the house first before the family members to usher in auspicious energies in the house. Homas are performed during the Griha Pravesh to remove three Doshas or sins incurred while building a new house – digging earth, cutting trees, and breaking stones. Ganesha Homa and Navagraha Homa are performed to remove any obstacles, purify the household, and gain success and prosperity. After the Homa and Poojas, the lady of the house boils milk at an auspicious time and let it spill over to invite abundance. The boiled milk is first offered to the Kula Devata or family deity, and then distributed to family members. Vedic priests and the guests should be fed with a sumptuous meal. The family should stay in the house overnight and the house not be locked on that night. Lamp should be kept burning for divine protection.
