So what are some ways we can train our ears to recognize the different distances between notes? Well the best way to do this is to find a song that you know 100%. What’s the catchiest part of the song for you? (The part that you find yourself singing over and over again.) If you are able to hum that melody that’s a plus. Once you have that, figure out what the first two notes of that part are. What you’re doing is you’re adding to the library in your brain a name for the first two notes of that chorus that you can’t get out of your head. And the next time you hear someone play those two notes - whether you’re jamming with a friend or you’re doing a melodic dictation in class - you’ll be like "oh that’s a major 3rd."
