| Video Discription | "Edema in the legs due to prolonged standing can happen due to various reasons. The most common cause is because of some problems in the vein which can carry the impure blood from the legs upwards. It could be a blockage in the deep vein, called deep vein thrombosis. It could be because of the perforators in the vein which are leaky or it could be because of the weal valves in the vein which is making the blood to leak backward because usually when the blood goes up then the valve closes and it should not allow the blood to leak down. But if you have a weak valve it can open up and the blood can leak down causing pooling of impure blood in the feet and so there can be a little swelling that can happen on prolonged standing. It is the most common reason. But we should also consider the possibility of other health issues. Swelling in the feet can be seen in cardiac problems, kidney problems and in liver problems. In kidney problems the patient has swelling as soon as they wake up in the morning. Cardiac problems the swelling is more towards the evenings. So we can differentiate. Liver problems have certain other group of symptoms like hepatic fetor; it is called a bad smell or certain other symptoms like asterixis spider nevi. So these are certain symptoms which a physician can relive better. So it is better if you find swelling in the feet when you stand for a long time then you need to take medical attention for that. See that you don’t stand for long period. Keep the foot end of the bed elevated, keep your leg elevated when you are sitting see that you are using a craig bandage or some kind of support to help the body to push the blood upward.
