Font weight can be normal, bold, extra bold and more. If you use custom font in website or in any app, you have to download font files for font variations and create font face for each variation in CSS. Using multiple font variations require multiple font files. This is becoming a thing of past. You can use one font file and use font variations using only one font file. It will speed up your website, keep CSS small, less server requests, and there are many other benefits as well. I have an HTML page and I want to display text in different font weight using custom font. I have three paragraphs with different classes. I download font files for normal, bold and extra bold variation and created font face. Three font face in CSS for three font weights for same font. I am using three different font files to display normal, bold and extra bold font weight variation in my page. Font is open sans but to use its normal, bold and extra bold variations, we are using three font files. It can be improved. How can we use one font file to get three variations for font weight? I created another font face and used variable font. Google fonts provide variable font also. You can download font family and if it has support it will bring variable font also. I used variable font file and then use CSS property 'font variation settings'. Basically support for variable font is inside font file. Font file is made in this way that it supports certain variations. You can not take just any font and use it as a variable font. You can go to Google fonts and filter variable fonts. There are many free and open source variable fonts. In the video I have shown how can we convert font format from TTF to WOFF2 as well. MDN has got details on implementation of font variation settings. Search for 'CSS font variation settings' and 'Variable fonts guide' to read all about variable fonts and how to use them. Also Google web font icons have variable fonts implementation. variable font is supported by all popular web browsers. So we can use variable fonts where one font file can provide variations by using 'font variation settings' in CSS. Use variable fonts when you are using custom fonts. You have to just get the font file that supports font variations. It will save bandwidth, time, server requests and it will speed up your website.
