Storm follows up on the mostly successful, but already year old DNA with the all new DNA Coil. Just like its predecessor, the DNA coil features the super strong Supercoil core with a huge .023 intermediate diff. New to storm’s domestic releases is the EVO pearl coverstock finished with their reactagloss polish out of the box.
For the Layout, I actually went with something I don’t normally do with big asyms like this, but I had a feeling it would work well. The 5.5x5.5x4.25 is a really clean and continuous type of layout, which the hope was to blend out how the core uses its intermediate differential and not just lock up in the midlane.
AND ON THE LANES… Ooh mama this one is going to be good. When the original DNA came out, I can be quoted in having said that it felt like an asymmetrical Phaze 2. Well, this all new DNA coil feels like what they were trying to do with the Phaze 3, 4 and 5, but this one actually does it. The cover is strong, but its not crazy strong, and the core is definitely doing a lot of work, but the layout really did what I wanted it to do.
But my favorite part about throwing this one is how it is just such a perfect illustration of the Storm ball motion that has worked so well for so many bowlers. This DNA coil is not the most continuous ball i’ve ever thrown. It deflects on most hits, but its that type of motion that makes storm balls strike. Many other pieces have been like this in the past, but it’s been a while since we’ve seen it and I am happy this shape is back in my bag.
On the list of downsides, there’s really only one that stands out, and that’s that you have to throw the DNA coil well to see consistent results. The shots I threw bad didn’t really bail me out, but if I threw the ball well and in the right area downlane, there was basically zero doubt I was going to strike. So, if you’re in a good spot with it, it should reward you often with good scores.
But when you’re not matched up with it, I think pairing it with a Phaze 2 and an Xponent Pearl would be a great way to balance that out. Both pieces are symmetrical and have a similar cover strength, but they’ll create some extra miss room when the line is either too tight or hooks to much for the DNA coil.
Jumping to our crossbrand comparisons, I first took a look at the Violent Collision from DV8 and here I see a shape that’s slightly stronger more even off the spot than the Coil. Don’t get me wrong, these differences are subtle, but I would use the Violent collision over the Coil if I needed the ball to read the midlane more to be slower off the spot.
Then I looked at the Crimson Jackal from Motiv and the only difference I see is the decreased intermediate diff than the Coil. These two pieces are very, very similar, but those with a lower rev rate will likely enjoy the DNA a bit more because the ball will do more of the work for you.
But with that, here’s my recommendations on types of bowlers that I think would match up well with this piece. The first is just as I said. Low rev rate bowlers. I don’t really care what your ball speed is, if your rev rate is below 350, the DNA coil is going to match up well for you. The core and cover balance is tailor made for these bowlers, and will allow them to use a big piece and not leave corner pins all night.
The second recommendation is for bowlers who have liked the recently released Absolute Power. Unlike the original absolute which I thought was a dud of a release, this DNA Coil is the shiny, huge core complementary piece that the Absolute Power needs. They’ll be effective in similar parts of the lane, and if one doesn’t work, there’s a good chance the other one will.
The all new DNA Coil might just be the shiny phaze 2 I’ve been dreaming about since 2016, but in the right hands, could be the one that gives your competition nightmares.
