IELTS teachers, including myself, always tell students that their ideas do not matter on the IELTS Exam. What is important is your communication. This is true- to a certain extent. We tell this during Speaking Exam preparation, because pausing to think of a “perfect” word or example leads to poor Fluency/Coherence scores, as well as Vocabulary scores. We also tell you this during Writing Exam preparation, for much of the same reason. Spending too long trying to think of “perfect” reasons and examples during the planning and/or writing stages wastes time, and then you may not finish your essay, and you definitely will not have time to check your work. However, having said that, let me tell you why you’re ideas do matter. When you can provide specific, relevant ideas from the world around you, this raises scores. You’ll use impressive, specific vocabulary. Also, you will support and prove your ideas in strong, intelligent ways, raising your Fluency/Coherence score for Speaking and your Cohesion/Coherence and Task Response scores for Writing. How can you get these ideas so you’re ready to produce them on test day? Read! Watch! Read newspapers and novels. Watch movies and TV programmes. The important thing is that the material is engaging to you. Then, after you watch or read, talk to yourself in the mirror about it. Summarise the story, and then expound on your opinion about the topics and characters. This encourages your culture of thinking, which is vital to develop not only for all parts of the IELTS Exam, but also for your life after IELTS.
