| Video Discription | On Saturday October 8, 2016 the robotics world converged on Zürich Switzerland to display the current state of assistive technology and raise awareness to the necessity for continued research and development. IHMC Robotics placed 2nd in the Powered Exoskeleton race, and while all the teams appreciate the medals, the Cybathlon provided an unprecedented opportunity for researchers across many disciplines to meet face to face. This will hopefully lead to collaborations that otherwise would not have happened. Following the competition, before packing up to return home, we decided to test our exoskeleton in a real world environment to gain some real world experience. Pilot Mark Daniel, accompanied by the entire ihmc Cybathlon team, donned his exoskeleton and walked through Zürich. Since our only experience with testing the robot is in the lab, the short time we spent in the real world reinforced our understanding of the many limitations of exoskeleton technology in it's current state. Raising someone to eye level that cannot defend themselves against gravity is a serious endeavor, and it is readily apparent that much more research is needed before we can safely provide a person with lower body paralysis a walking device that will perform well in real world environments. We are just at the beginning of this, as a community, and we are very thankful of the researchers and pilots in all of the fields on display at the Cybathlon. The organizers of the Cybathlon performed an amazing job, and we truly hope to meet up with our "opponents" again in future Cybathlon events.
