City of Windhoek spokesperson Harold Akwenye made it clear that the land grabbers are in contravention of the law and the bylaws of the Windhoek municipality and added that law enforcement agencies will be requested to intervene at some stage. “The City Council will not tolerate lawlessness. Those taking matters into their own hands by erecting illegal structures on council land will be dealt with," Akwenye said. The City of Windhoek also promised to intervene in the incident of land grabbing and construction of new shacks in the Tobias Hainyeko constituency recently. During that incident, the land grabbing started with four small structures that were erected and currently comprise more than 200 houses in the area without any action being announced. The 8ste Laan protesters also complained about their unsuccessful efforts to meet the mayor and member of the city council over the past few weeks and through a committee decided on this drastic action in an attempt to force negotiations with the city leadership about their plight. Informanté News visited the scene and witnessed hundreds of people who are clearing land with the intention of building shacks and occupying it. On Saturday the indignant and aggressive land grabbers turned to extreme measures by blocking streets with rubble and burning tyres to keep law enforcement officials from intervening. [rN4s_dkakd0] |
